Why is My Car Leaking Water?

Car Leaking Water or Fluid

If you notice water leaking from under your car, there’s no need to panic. Often, the source of a car leaking water is just simple condensation. Condensation can form in the air conditioning system and puddle under the front of the vehicle, or it can form near the tailpipe due to exhaust condensation. But, it’s important to verify that the leak is indeed water and not something more serious. And the team at Axius Chevrolet can teach you how to do just that, so let’s get started!

Car Leaking Water: DIY Diagnostics

If you think you see water leaking from under your car, it’s time to do a little investigating. Grab a white sheet of paper and head to the garage.

  • Place the sheet of paper under the source of the leak. Is the fluid colorless like water? Or is it actually blue, green, or yellow like coolant?
  • If you suspect the leaking liquid to be coolant, double-check. Pop the hood and note your coolant levels. If your levels are low, visit the service center.
  • If the leaking liquid is blue or green and your coolant levels are fine, check the windshield wiper fluid reservoir. The reservoir can crack during cold weather in Middlebury and Goshen, resulting in leaks.
  • Also note the amount of water leaking from under your car. A small amount is probably normal, but a large amount could indicate issues like a blown gasket – especially if you notice white smoke from the exhaust pipe.

Is My Car Leaking Water or Something Else?

Sometimes a car leaking water is actually a car leaking coolant or transmission fluid. How can you tell? Each essential automotive fluid has unique coloring. So, grab your sheet of white paper and compare the color of the fluid to the following:

  • Red – Transmission Fluid or Power Steering Fluid
  • Orange – Transmission Fluid or Radiator Coolant
  • Yellow – Radiator Coolant
  • Green – Antifreeze from Water Pump, Hoses, or Radiator
  • Blue – Windshield Wiper Fluid
  • Dark Brown – Brake Fluid or Older Engine Oil
  • Light Brown – Newer Engine Oil or Gear Lubricant
  • Pink – Power Steering Fluid or Transmission Fluid
